La pintura de castas s’inscrit dans un champ iconographique riche dont les toiles d’Albert Eckhout, au milieu du XVIIe siècle, sont l’un des plus beaux exemples. L’association qu’elle effectue entre une iconographie et des nomenclatures variées exprime par ailleurs la traduction savante de savoirs locaux ou régionaux. Ainsi, bien que fortement « territorialisés », ces savoirs sont faits pour « voyager » et être intégrés dans différentes constructions intellectuelles, à l’instar de l’utilisation qu’en fait le médecin italien Leopoldo Caldani, à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, dans son Memorie di Matematica e Fisica della Societa Italiana (ici, t. 8, Ire partie).

Pintura de castas (casta painting) is part of rich field of iconography. Albert Eckhout’s mid-seventeenth century paintings provide some of the most beautiful examples of this genre. By associating imagery and a diverse range of vocabulary, casta paintings express a wealth of local and regional information. Despite its “territorial” nature, this information was meant to “travel“ and merge with other intellectual practices. The Italian doctor Leopoldo Caldani's Memorie di Matematica e Fisica della Sociate Italiana, written in the late eighteenth century, offers an example of this (vol. 1, part I is provided below).
