Archives special issue

Issue 2019, no. 3/4 is a double issue focusing on one of the major historiographical questions of recent decades: archives. A crucial site for historical research since the nineteenth century, archives are currently at the heart of new and innovative ways of thinking about history. Once the preserve of research on medieval and early modern Europe, the dense relationship between archives and scholarly history has not only extended into more modern periods and more diverse terrains—notably colonial and postcolonial—but also touches on new concerns, both political and material. By varying the perspective in terms of both time (from Late Antiquity to the present) and space (from Africa to Europe, via Russia), this issue seeks to provide a critical overview of the shift that has returned archives to the center of the historian’s craft. It is accompanied by a selection of book reviews dedicated to archives, sources, and documents.
